One of my favourite new foodie finds from last year was The Tiger pub in Camberwell and their amazing vegetarian and vegan menu. It can often be quite difficult to find multiple veggie options in pubs (I’m so tired of seeing butternut squash or mushroom risotto on the menus!), but in The Tiger an entire half of the menu is either vegetarian or vegan. There are lots of different burgers, little plates for smaller hunger as well as a vegan roast on Sundays, so there’s plenty to choose from!
The pub has a really cool rustic and shabby chic decor (it is part of the super cool Antic group, after all) and the exterior is gorgeous too with its shiny green tiles. The pub has been there in various forms since 1826, so there’s lots of history and charm there.
I was invited by the lovely staff at The Tiger to try out their new vegetarian menu, so last Wednesday Jim and I went there to have a little midweek date night (I’ve been wanting to take him there for aaaaages!). We both arrived very hungry, and so instead of both of us ordering something separately, we decided to order loooots of different things and share everything, so that we could try out as many different things as possible.
Considering how hungry we were whilst ordering, I’m actually pretty proud of the fact that we didn’t end up ordering the entire menu… Instead, we opted for three different small plates, one burger and a portion of fries and figured we’d just order more if we were still hungry. Turns out our ordering game was spot on as this seemed to be *just* the right amount for two people to share.
First came the halloumi bites, which I’ve had before and have been dreaming about ever since trying them for the first time. They come fried and cut into little cubes, and served with the most AMAZING jalapeño dip. I’m currently trying to figure out how to recreate this at home…
The second small plate we ordered was the seitan buffalo thighs that came perfectly seasoned and smothered in buffalo sauce with vegan blue cheese dip as a condiment. I’m so glad that veggie meat with buffalo sauce is such a thing now as I absolutely LOVE the stuff. These bites were no exception – I loved the texture and the buffalo sauce and the vegan blue cheese were spot on!
Our third and last little plate was a vegetarian shrimp taco with a bloody mary rose sauce. In all honesty, I left this one for Jim – not because it wasn’t well prepared, but because I wasn’t a fan of shrimp when I was a meat eater, and I still don’t like the faux version of it either. Which I guess can only be a compliment for this dish as for me it just felt way too authentic, which just means that for shrimp lovers it will be an absolute treat!
As well as the three smaller plates, we also shared a buffalo chicken burger and a big portion of fries. We actually ordered the Seitan Avo Bacon burger (which sounds amazing!) but were accidentally delivered the buffalo burger instead. I only realised this after I’d taken a bite, and I didn’t want to send it back as I didn’t want it to go to waste! I didn’t mind too much though, as I reeeaally love the buffalo seitan burger, too! That said, I’m definitely going back for that faux bacon burger, too – it sounds pretty incredible.
As for the chips, they were really tasty too and really felt like proper chippy chips with lots of crispy ones (aka the best ones) in the mix too. Aside from normal chips, you could also choose from cheesy loaded fries or sweet potato fries!
