Visiting as many different kinds of pubs as I can is one of my favourite things to do in London. Going to a pub feels like such a quintessentially British thing to do and so many popular past times, such as after work drinks and Sunday roasts, are so closely connected to pubs too. In my locals I see people of all ages – there are people spending time with their families, catching up with friends and even going on date nights!
I don’t really have my own local where I would go every week and know everyone in (although I do love The Junction in Brixton which is probably my most frequented one at the moment!), but I do love exploring as many new places as I can, especially in my local area. One of my newer finds is The King & Co in Clapham, which has won me over with its tasty menu, quirky and colourful decor and, most of all, with its little outdoor terrace which is the perfect place for people watching!
The King & Co in Clapham is an independent freehouse, and it’s the perfect neighbourhood pub – it’s close enough to a tube station (Clapham Common) which means it’s easy to access, but far away enough to not feel too central, which helps it keep its local feel. The pub is very proud of its independent status, too, and regularly host events for locals, such as weekly pub quizzes, gigs and lots of other types of events, such as Homebrew Wednesdays, where you can buy beer the pub has brewed themselves – it’ll only set you back £4 per pint!
My favourite thing about The King & Co is the love and care they clearly have for choosing the drinks and food they serve. They’re an independent pub, which means that they are free to choose all the drinks they sell on the premises, and you can really see this in their carefully crafted wine and craft beer lists.
If you go to their website, you can also find a list of ALL the drinks they have on tap, with a little explanation on what everything tastes like, too, which, for a beer novice like me is *so* great as I’m (desperately) trying to get better at trying new flavours and learning more!
Trying these beers is a great way of supporting an independent pub as well as the little breweries themselves, some of them which are quite local too (the nearby London Beer Lab in Brixton being one of them)! You can see some of the other breweries on tap in the photo below.
I love the quirky decor in King & Co – from the vintage-y toilet signs to random things such as tiny bicycles on the walls! I’m also a huge fan of the colourful walls and big windows, which make the whole space feel really vibrant and light. There are also lots of different types of flowers and plants everywhere, which just adds to the lovely colourfulness of the pub.
The food list in King & Co is quite a typical pub menu: there are burgers, sharing platters and a short list of bigger mains as well as quite a few small, tapas-like, dishes.
From the short main menu only one dish is vegetarian, but overall there’s quite a lot of choice for veggies as a lot of the small dishes are vegetarian (think things like nachos, deep fried mac and cheese bites and a goats cheese salad) and there’s also a veggie burger (halloumi & roasted red pepper) and a vegetarian sharing plate.
My boyfriend and I both opted for burgers: we both had the halloumi and red pepper one but added different things to it: me jalapenos and cheese, and Jim beef chilli. The burger itself was really yummy, but personally I don’t think I should have added any extras: the jalapenos weren’t spicy at all and the cheese was a bit too much seeing as it was a halloumi burger (not sure what I was thinking there…), so was very cheesy already.
Other than my misplaced extra ordering (which luckily only set me back £1), the burger was really good and you really got a lot for your money – I’ve never had a halloumi burger with such a big portion of halloumi in it! So if you love cheese, this is definitely the one for you!
