Löyly, a beautiful outdoor terrace by the seaside, is quickly becoming my new favourite bar and restaurant in Helsinki. Situated right next to the Baltic Sea in Helsinki’s Hernesaari area, it boasts the biggest terrace in the city and is over 1500 square metres large. The whole thing is split over three levels and has an indoor restaurant, outdoor terrace as well as a big sauna with the most beautiful sea views.
I’ve never visited the sauna part of Löyly, but I really want to as that’s basically the heart of the place: löyly is Finnish and while it’s impossible to translate directly, it basically means the heat and steam derived from throwing water on the hot stones. Basically: if you don’t have good löyly, you’re not going to have a good sauna, either! The sauna experience at Löyly will set you back €19 for two hours and the actual room looks like this – just add amazing sea views.
But, enough about the sauna – I came here for drinks, after all! I took a gazillion photos (it’s just such a beautiful place!) and tried to choose the best ones to share – I hope you’ll end up loving it (through the photos, if nothing else!) as much as I did.
Löyly from afar – isn’t the building just so beautiful? It was designed by an architecture duo called Avanto Architects and is almost entirely made of wood.
The beauty of Löyly doesn’t come cheap – I paid €20 altogether for an Aperol Spritz and a lonkero (a Finnish gin based mixed drink). I have to say, hearing the price hurt a bit, but you really come here for the experience, so I would say it was still worth every penny.
It’s also worth noting that Helsinki is quite expensive as it is, so I would say that Löyly wasn’t actually that much more pricey than somewhere else in the centre of the city would be.
The above photo is of the outdoors part of the restaurant (there’s also lots of seating on the inside if the weather isn’t on your side!) and when we visited, there was also a little pizza kiosk next to the bar dishing out fresh pizzas which you could then eat anywhere in the terrace. I’m not sure if this is only a summer thing, but it looked really good!
I mentioned earlier that Löyly is split into three levels, and in the above photo you can see two of them, with the third one being just at the top of these stairs where I was taking the photo from.
I personally loved staying on the “first floor” as it’s right on sea level and you can get super comfy on the deck chairs whilst listening to the waves crashing underneath you – it’s the most relaxing feeling! But, the views from the upper floors are pretty amazing, too, so it’s definitely worth checking out which one’s your favourite.
Would you love visiting a place like Löyly? And most importantly, would you try out the sauna?! I’m quite saddened that we didn’t have time to do it this time, but I guess there’s always next summer! I can’t wait to visit again.
