Mange Tout is an independent French bistro in the centre of Brighton, situated in the buzzing North Laine area of the city. It’s been serving its loyal customers since 2009, and I can see why it’s still going strong after 11 years – the staff are extremely friendly and lovely, and the menu has a bit of something for everyone!
Mange Tout is open from morning to evening and has two different menus: one for breakfast/brunch and one for dinner. We went for brunch (more on the food later), but if you wanted to visit later on in the evening, you can expect to find dishes such as French onion soup and a cheese tortillette on the menu! They also have a selection of different natural wines for you to enjoy with your food.
Most of the ingredients used in Mange Tout’s dishes are sustainably sourced from around the Sussex area, and things like their fresh juices and fruit kefir are made daily on site from scratch.
The brunch menu at Mange Tout is divided into sweet and savoury dishes, with the former including things such as cinnamon French toast (!!) and croissants with jam or chocolate sauce.
As much as I was drooling just at the thought of the cinnamon French toast, in the end I ordered from the savoury list as I was worried eating something sweet first thing in the morning would make me feel a bit sick. In hindsight, I should have mixed and matched…!
The savoury brunch list consists of smaller dishes like croissants with ham and cheese to bigger brunch dishes, which are a kind of French twist on the classic full English breakfasts.
In the end, I went for the latter – a dish called mange tout végétarien, which consisted of Sussex halloumi, roasted mushrooms, wilted spinach, tomato compote, two eggs your way and a big piece of French bread (‘tartine’). The dish was really lovely, and I especially liked the Sussex halloumi (who knew that was a thing!) and the tartine. I wish there’s been a bit more of the tomato sauce as that was really yummy too, and without it the dish could feel a bit dry at times. I think next time I’ll just ask for a bit of extra butter for the bread!
Jim opted for eggs florentine which came with two organic poached eggs, toasted organic sourdough & fresh hollandaise sauce and he devoured every last piece!
