Lost in the Lanes is a local gem at the heart of Brighton’s lanes offering a concise menu full of delicious things in a beautiful environment. It opened in 2017 and has quickly become a popular spot for both brunch and lunch in the city – in fact, it was the first place my friend Alex wanted to return to when she visited her old hometown for the first time in a while last weekend!
We had booked a table and requested one outside, which they kindly managed to provide us. It’s a good thing we booked, too – our reservation was at 11 and there was already a small queue forming at the front door, which only got longer in the next few hours we were at the restaurant. If you do book, make sure to pop your head inside to let them know, otherwise they might just think you’re queuing for a table!
My friend Alex and I possibly went a tiny bit overboard with our ordering, but honestly, I have no regrets. We both ordered the Lost Vegetarian Breakfast *and* a side of their INCREDIBLE (more on these later…) gourmet fried potatoes. We didn’t quite realise how big the “side” portion of the potatoes would be, but oh well…
The vegetarian breakfast consisted of marinated halloumi, field mushrooms, roasted tomatoes, homemade hash, poached egg, smashed avocado & sourdough toast and was absolutely delicious *as well as* being a pretty sizeable portion – I would’ve honestly been full just from this…
Now, about these gourmet fried potatoes… I don’t even know how to begin to describe them – they were SO good. I already had high expectations from the description, and all of them were not only met, but also highly exceeded.
The potatoes are roasted and fried baby potatoes, which makes them incredibly crispy on the outside and very fluffy on the inside. The potatoes have been fried with amazing spices and other ingredient combos – there are four in total, out of which three are vegetarian (and one vegan).
My potatoes were fried with rosemary, lemon, truffle oil and parmesan, and were SO good. The flavours were strong and complimented each other perfectly, and there were so many amazing crispy bits everywhere which were my absolute favourites!
Alex went for the vegan option, which consisted of cajun spice, corn salsa, coriander & chipotle aioli. I stole a few from Alex and can confirm that these were amazing too – maybe even my favourites! I’ll definitely order a full portion of these the next time I go.
